7 REASONS TO WALK… TODAY

4 MINUTE READ…

WALK FOR HAPPINESS
The more and more I continue to listen to the fittest, most successful, and inspiring individuals on the planet, the more they convince me that heading out for a walk today will have a lasting impact on my well being.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not strolling in the park for an hour a day thinking i’m going to end up with the VO2 Max of Ben Greenfield. Or improve my work capacity to the level of Gary Vaynerchuk (although I can still hope). Most of the time, walking does nothing else for me but make me a little bit happier than I was before I walked. Don’t we all want to be a little bit happier? Walk 🙂
It’s ok If you don’t find life changing revelations during a walk, but there might be one walk that does trigger a change or an inspiration. I can happily say that it was during a walk (actually during multiple walks) that I finally worked up the courage to start a new business, Optimised by nature. I am sure there are many of you that want to start something you’re passionate about. An exercise program, a new career, whatever it is, who knows? Maybe it starts with a walk.
WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT
Let’s keep in mind that everyone is different and everything you do will affect you differently than it would the next person. When enough people say the same thing over and over, eventually you need to say to yourself – if it’s helping them, maybe I should give it a try.
We aren’t talking about running a marathon here. We are talking about finding 30 – 60 minutes a day to stretch the legs and go for a walk.
I have put together 7 reasons why you should go for a walk today. You might find them to be stupid reasons and would prefer the couch potato option, or you might find that just 1 of these reasons triggers you to get up and go for a walk. That’s enough for me. If someone gets up and goes for a walk after reading this, then my mission here is complete!

THE 7 REASONS

  1. Decrease in mortality rate – A study surveying more than 50,000 walkers in the United Kingdom found regularly walking at an average, brisk or fast pace was associated with a 20% reduction in all-cause mortality
  2. Experience all the benefits of running, without the injury! Moderate-intensity walking shows a similarly visible reduction in risk for heart disease, high cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure, when compared to vigorous-intensity running.
  3. Improve your social life! Pick a route, grab a friend or two, and before you know it you’re all caught up on the latest gossip while completing your daily exercise requirement.
  4. walk can improve your resting heart rate. Having a low resting heart rate is a sign of an efficiently working heart which lowers the risk of any cardiovascular disease
  5. Fresh air and Blood flow – After potentially a day at the office sitting for 8 hours, allocate some time to stretch your legs and get the blood flowing. We are so used to going home after a long day and slumping on the couch, falling asleep, and repeating. You will be surprised what a stroll in mother nature can do for your body and mind after being cooped up in an office! See how you go.
  6. Improve creativity – some of the most innovative and hard working individuals on the planet take daily strolls to come up with their next idea, speech, or pitch. If they are doing it, why aren’t you? The next big idea is around the corner… why can’t it be yours?
  7. Improve your mindfulness – Walking can help relieve stress and anxiety. We so often get caught up in thoughts that are overwhelming but also insignificant. Be present when walking, take in the space around you and stay grounded. This will help you focus on what is truly important. It will help you let go of your worries.

If you’ve made it this far, or you’ve just skipped to the bottom, know that I appreciate you reading this, and hopefully after reading this piece you’ll lace up those sneakers and head out for a walk.
